This was an audition tape for a touring Simon & Garfunkel revue. Recording remotely presents a unique challenge in that it lengthens the feedback loop considerably. I end up with the same result basically every single time:
I’ll submit my first pass at something, having turned in a performance that I feel is tasteful and be asked to “play out more” in return. “Give us more” runs counter to every single thing I learned as a working bassist. Your job is rarely to convince anyone that you sound good, but instead convince the person hiring you that they sound great. In this case, it was easy enough to pretend I was being paid by the note.
I ultimately got the gig and discovered quickly that’s next to impossible to get hyped up to the music of Simon & Garfunkel. You can stare at an empty street in the rain, maybe.
